This excellent HSE Information Page addresses many questions women have including how often smears are needed, what the results mean and will give women who have never had a smear a good idea of the process involved.  

Please note that we do not routinely assess or test for STIs when you attend for a Smear Test so if this is something you are concerned about, please discuss it with the nurse or a doctor.  SH24 offers free STI testing kits that are posted to your address in a blank envelope.
